As university staff we can all do our bit for our students’ well-being. But what responsibility does the University actually have and what can you do for students as a staff member? What are the early signs that a student is struggling and what preventive action can you take?

At the symposium Student well-being –
from abstract term to concrete tools we will discuss the subject with one another and with students. In relevant workshops and lectures, we will offer tools to improve our students’ well-being to lecturers, study advisers, student deans and any other colleagues who are in contact with students.

Keynote

Toske Andreoli studied psychology and philosophy in Groningen. Her book De mooiste tijd van je leven? (The best days of your life?) is an adaptation of the master’s thesis that she wrote in 2018 under the supervision of Trudy Dehue. She was awarded the LSVb Thesis Prize 2019 .

The best days of your life? offers a new perspective on student stress. Andreoli goes beyond the usual explanations to give a meticulous analysis of the causes of student mental health problems. She calls for more engagement, shared routines and social cohesion.

Panel discussion

In the panel discussion host Thea van Wijk and the panel, which will include a student psychologist, a study adviser and a student, will try to answer the question: ‘What can you do as a staff member in the context of student well-being?’ Andreoli will use statements and questions to find out what the panel thinks about student well-being. What is the role of a lecturer, for example, or a study adviser?

Workshops

If you’d like to develop your skills and knowledge about student well-being, why not sign up for the workshops? Once you've singed up for the symposium you'll receive an e-mail inviting you to registrate for the workshops.

We have listed the English spoken workshops below. See the full Dutch programme here

first workshop round 14:45 - 15:30

Do you sometimes feel unsatisfied or tired after talking with students? Do you recognize that a conversation sometimes goes in all directions? Do you find yourself 'working hard' for some students? This could simply be due to the 'contract' with the student.

During this workshop you will learn about different types of contracts, what effect this has on the contact with the student, and how you can consciously use it for your conversations. After this workshop, your students will be (even) more satisfied and you will feel more energetic and motivated!

This workshop will be given by Charlotte Rosalie, study advisor, FGGA.

Bystander Intervention Training teaches individuals how to recognize and safely intervene in situations they feel the need to act upon. This workshop develops participants’ skills to intervene in a variety of challenging, real life situations and strengthens their assertiveness in both personal and external experiences.

This workshop will be given by Grabriella Thompson, Our bodies, our voice.

Have you heard of the Winter Weeks, the Well- being Wednesdays, or the Student Support Groups? The university offers a large variety of services that employees can recommend to students – but to be able to refer to this you must first know about it.

Join this workshop to discuss what services and programmes can help students in specific situations best and learn how to use all the tools at your disposal. We are also looking forward to getting your input on what else students need and how we can improve the toolkit.

This workshop will be given by Kendra Parry and Celine Westhoff, Student Well-being Program

Second workshop round 15:45 - 16:30

Most students are optimistic goal-setters. They think more can be done in the time they have. Or they set goals that they think they should be able to achieve, while sometimes they don't have the knowledge and experience yet.

In this workshop we will work with the NLP working model and the formulation of SMART goals. The aim of the workshop is that you can better guide students in setting goals. And who knows, it might even help you?

This workshop will be given by Simone Keijsers, trainer SOZ/SSS
