Sustainable Insurance: Technological Solutions and Everyday Challenges

In the insurance sector, sustainability means that various goals have to be met; helping clients to overcome economic, physical and environmental adversities; managing risks that change over time, especially so in the ‘Global South’; and making profit for stakeholders in a volatile global economy. The insurance sector develops new technologies and organizational models that aim to guarantee the sustainability of insurance while expanding the market in the ‘Global South’.

Based on a case study approach, I show how these new technologies and organization models emerge and aim to contribute to sustainability. I also show these work out in practice, especially in the everyday life of clients but also as experienced by professionals working in the insurance sector. Such a case study approach offers important insight into why clients, professionals and other people have different views on and experiences with the sustainability of insurance. This helps us to understand how sustainability becomes a source of contestation. This research is part of my ERC Consolidator Project ‘Moralising Misfortune'.

Liveable communities – Liveable Planet

The Liveable Planet programme is one of the eight interdisciplinary programmes that were launched at Leiden University in 2020

Leiden’s Liveable Planet programme aims to combine scientific, policy, socio-cultural and historical/archaeological research at Leiden University into coherent research with which we can tackle the major challenges of a transition to a habitable planet with ecological sustainability. The programme will  serve as a hub for the wide range of relevant research carried out within Leiden University and welcomes interaction with colleagues interested in contributing to the initiative within as well as outside of Leiden University.
