In this talk, we first reflect on the various manifestations of ‘inequality’ in science, based on a reading of the science policies of a selection of African countries, as well as of relevant literature produced by African scholars, and by scholars publishing about Africa. In the second part, we report on how such inequalities are experienced by scholars based in Africa as well as in other Southern world regions who work in environmental fields. Thereby, we synthezise insights from an international workshop entitled “Science as a site of inequality: an exploratory workshop for sharing evidence and experience from environment-related research fields”, which we convene as part of the Programme Point Sud funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The aim of the event is to explore how inequality manifests, is created and perpetuated in four scenes of scientific activity: (1) research agenda setting and funding; (2) research collaboration and data sharing; (3) research publishing; and (4) research engagement and uptake. We will share core themes that emerged from the workshop discussions and sketch aspects of a future research agenda on inequality in science that foregrounds Southern perspectives
