Modern History is synonymous with the formation of nation-states and the concomitant construction of national identities. Processes of boundary-making and the rhetoric of inclusion and exclusion have, however, varied from one country to another. These processes have been shaped by the entanglements between state power, and/or capital, and local actors.
These histories raise various questions such as: which groups get included or excluded; are there clear boundaries between these groups, and how permeable are these? What social, cultural, and political instruments are deployed by states in the name of governance? What are the strategies of marginalized groups to resist or survive these efforts?
The seminar will examine processes whereby marginalized groups (whether based on gender, class, race/ethnicity, or religion) navigate their way economically and politically in dealing with state actors, corporate capital, NGOs and their own communities in the national and transnational context.
Seminar marking the farewell of Ratna Saptari
The CADS Research Cluster Asia is hosting this event to celebrate Ratna Saptari's farewell. Ratna Saptari began at CADS in Leiden in 2007. Her research has focused on how workers' lives are multi-sited. She has written extensively on gender and labour relations, workplace politics, domestic workers, and collective and individual memories over the last fifteen years. She worked on a subproject within the project "Plants, People, and Work: The Social History of Cash Crops in Asia, 18th to 20th Centuries" (IISH/UvA/Amsterdam, financed by NWO) and the project "Alternative Indonesian Historiographies" (in partnership with KITLV/Leiden, supported by KNAW). Currently she is also involved with the Indonesian Migrant Workers' Union in the Netherlands and in the campaign to end State impunity of the 1965 genocide in Indonesia through Watch65.
