The Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) invites you to the book launch of 'Ruminations: Framing a sense of self and coming to terms with the other' by Tahir Abbas on Thursday 15 December 2022.
Ruminations is Professor Tahir Abbas’ seventeenth published book. In this work, which he spent over a decade and a half putting together and finally completed during the recent lockdown period, he reflects on some of the pertinent issues concerning questions of identity and belonging, exclusion and inclusion in education and labour market participation, and broader issues concerning citizenship and belonging.
This is an intentional endeavour to highlight and analyse themes of ethnic identity and belonging based on personal thoughts as well as analytical observations and insights gained through his travels and stays around the world.
Professional development and reflection
The first part of the book focuses on his early memories of identity and belonging, as well as his reflections on his education, while the second part focuses on his intellectual and cultural observations on race, ethnicity, and religion, which have established his academic and policy engagement profile over the last two decades or so.
The book provides an insider’s view on critical topics while keeping the material light and approachable, highlighting Professor Abbas’ life up to this point in his professional development while also functioning as a reflection on the past and his aspirations and anxieties for the future.
