‘Just one more round!’ That is what many players think, as they play their favorite video games and board games until the early hours of the morning. And that raises a question: can we harness that kind of engagement elsewhere, for instance at work, for mundane activities… or in education? With the right techniques, maybe students would be as motivated to engage with course content as they are with games: ‘just one more course assignment!’. At least that is the promise of ‘gamification’, but what are the actual practices, and what might be the pitfalls of ‘gamifying’ a higher-ed course?

In this lunch lecture, Florian Schneider will reflect on his five-year LTA project on gamification in East Asian Studies. We will discuss practical tips on how to integrate mechanisms from table-top and video games into teaching practices, the effects this can have on learning, and the risks that come with such practices. For a sneak preview you can read Florian’s blog post for the Leiden Teachers Blog: Four lessons… and a caveat’.

This Lunch Lecture is initiated by the Leiden Teachers' Academy (LTA) and aims for teaching staff who want to improve their teaching. A vegetarian lunch is available. Registration (until 17 February 2023) is needed for catering purposes.
