On Thursday the 30th of March European Parliament President Roberta Metsola will visit Leiden University for an open discussion with students about the multiple challenges to peace, security, and democracy in Europe and the world, and the role the European Parliament plays in protecting the rights of European citizens and giving them the voice to shape our common European future.
The European Parliament is the only European Union institution which is directly elected by the European citizens. It plays a key role in deciding on European legislation, steering the policy course, and protecting the EU’s fundamental values of freedom and democracy. In just a year, you too will have a chance to vote for your own member of the European Parliament, and in that way help to shape the future of the European Union. A visit of the EP president is a unique opportunity to learn first-hand what the European Parliament does, what it can do for you, and how you can use your voice to influence politics in EU and in the world.

About Roberta Metsola
Roberta Metsola was elected President of the European Parliament in January 2022. She was first elected to the European Parliament in 2013, becoming one of Malta's first female Members of the European Parliament.
Professionally she is a lawyer who has specialised in European law and politics.
Prior to her election as a MEP, President Metsola served within the Permanent Representation of Malta to the European Union and later as the legal advisor to the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. In her student years, she campaigned actively for Malta's EU membership was active in various organisations, acting as the Secretary-General for the European Democrat Student organisation between 2002-2003.
She completed an ERASMUS exchange in France and graduated from the University of Malta and the College of Europe in Bruges.
The event is organised in cooperation with the European Parliament Liaison Office in the Netherlands.
