Due to economic crisis in his homeland a Portuguese manager started a subsidiary in Angola. After six years of executing all the ‘best management practices’ and of continued growth, the company suffered from a wild strike of its employees. This shock led the manager to start a process of organizational transformation. He studied the cultural differences in detail, after which he, together with his management and employees, applied local notions of community building and leadership into the structures of this foreign company. What does this case study tell us about the study and confluence of cultures and the notions of modernism and contemporary tradition? And what are the essentialist and performative aspects of the culture in this specific case?
