Are you interested in learning about educational subsidies for international cooperation and mobility schemes? Do you want to be inspired by exisiting internationalisation activities? Or simply want to know more about internationalisation at Humanities? Then register for the Onderwijsmiddag!

Internationalisation is a term that means different things to different people. For some, it concerns a series of international activities such as mobility for students and teachers or cooperation in international networks, partnerships and projects. For others, it focuses on the inclusion of an international, intercultural and/or global dimension in the curriculum and learning outcomes. During this Onderwijsmiddag organised by the Faculty of Humanities, we will take a look at the different aspects of internationalisation, ranging from practicalities and procedures to examples of successful internationalisation activities by teachers in the classroom.

Programme

The event will be opened by vice dean Mirjam de Baar at 14:00. Afterwards, there will be various talks

Part 1 (14:00 - 15:00)

Dick Smakman (Assistant Professor in Sociolinguistics) has successfully set up a ICM project with Ivane Javakhishvili State University (TSU) in Tbilisi. This project was aimed at deepening and extending the collaboration between TSU and Leiden University, both in the areas of staff exchange and (potentially) student exchange.

In our Virtual Exchange (VE) program, students from Leiden University work together with students from the United States to explore how delta regions across the Atlantic are challenged by similar socio-ecological threats and develop comparable patterns of resilience. Through the in-depth analysis of coastal and delta communities’ experiences, our students critically approach the relationship between climate change and environmental democracy.

This project was made possible through a VIS subsidy as well as an educational innovation grant. The partners are Tulane University (New Orleans), De Paul University (Chicago), and William and Mary College (Williamsburg).

The tele-tandem project, based on a proposal of Telles & Vassallo (2006), consists of a pilot programme of virtual exchange in which students of the BA Italian language and culture communicate and work on specific tasks together with Italian students who are studying Dutch in Italy. The project has three main learning objectives, all related to the theme of internationalisation.

This project was made possible with a VIS subsidy. The partners are various universities in Italy

Part 2 (15:00 - 16:00)

The Humanities International Office (HIO) is responsible for the coordination of the exchange and study abroad programmes of the Faculty and helps exchange students with information and advice regarding all practical and academic matters. Linda Huizinga (incoming exchange coordinator/HUM) will give a presentation on the services provided by HIO.

There are several funding opportunities for (virtual) international cooperation, including the Virtual International Cooperation (VIS) subsidy, International Credit Mobility (ICM) projects, Erasmus+ for teaching assignments etc. Carine de Wilde (Senior International Relations Officer/SEA) and Ivo Bles (Subsidy Officer/SEA) will give a short presentation on the various opportunities that exist and the services the Education Subsidy Team provides you with. Discussing the added value of these subsidies, they will inform you on how these opportunities empower and facilitate educational staff in creating meaningful international and intercultural connections.

The Faculty of Humanities will publish a Handbook for Academic Partnerships, developed by Aurelie van ‘t Slot (Policy Advisor Internationalisation/HUM). Participants of the Onderwijsmiddag will receive the handbook beforehand and are given the opportunity to ask questions about it.
