On Friday 26 May, from 13:00-15:00, prof. Lynne Bowker (Ottawa) and dr. Lettie Dorst (Leiden) will offer a 2-hour workshop on Machine Translation Literacy for (language) teachers. The workshop will start with a one-hour interactive lecture by Lynne Bowker explaining what Machine Translation Literacy is, why our students need it, and how we as teachers can help students use MT responsibly and safely by incorporating Machine Translation Literacy exercises in our teaching. We will then test and evaluate the materials (including infographics and animated videos) that were developed for Lettie Dorst’s Comenius project “The Value of Machine Translation in the Multilingual Academic Community” with the participants and discuss their thoughts on what they as teachers want and need in terms of MT Literacy and the use of MT (and other AI tools) in the classroom. The workshop will be held in Lipsius room 2.27
About Lynne Bowker
Lynne Bowker is Full Professor at the School of Translation and Interpretation at the University of Ottawa, where her teaching and research interests focus on the intersection of language and technology. With funding from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada, she is currently directing the Machine Translation Literacy Project. She has recently published an open access book entitled De-mystifying translation: Introducing translation to non-translators (Routledge, 2023), which includes a chapter on MT literacy.
