This year Chile commemorates the 50th anniversary of the military coup. On 11 September 1973 the armed forces put an end to the leftwing government led by Salvador Allende, who dramatically lost his life during the military takeover. This marked the beginning of 17 year of a brutal military dictator-ship led by General Augusto Pinochet. After 50 years the ex-perience of the Allende government, the coup d’état as well as the Pinochet dictatorship are very much present in the current political debates in Chile. The Chilean people is still very divided about their evaluation of the Allende and Pinochet periods and about the causes of the coup.

Four scholars of Chilean origin will meet at a roundtable to discuss about the Allende project, the military coup and the importance of these historical events for present-day Chile.

This commemoration will be closed with a cocktail. Everyone is welcome.
