Digital Humanities for Contemporary Policy Research - the Case of China
Please join us for our next LUCDH lunchtime talk presented by Dr. Rogier Creemers and Vincent Brussee (PhD) on Tuesday, 5 March 2024 at 12:00 – 13:00 (CET).
Research into China has become considerably more difficult in recent years, with increased political pressure on researchers and restrictions on access. But amidst this challenge, researchers leveraging digital tools can gain unique insights into contemporary China. In this talk, Dr. Rogier Creemers and Vincent Brussee (PhD) will discuss how they digitally collect hundreds of thousands of official documents and use them for the analysis of Chinese policy. Topics include using natural language processing (NLP) for measurement of the transparency of China’s government, assessing the impact of policy consultation on the formulation of cyber-policy, and interpretative questions surrounding the approaches. They will also discuss the challenges working with this data, such as geo-blocking, data quality issues, and security—as well as how to mitigate them.
