You are warmly invited to join us in celebrating the start of the new year with the Meijers Lecture, the presentation of the Meijers Prizes and the Van Wersch Springplank Prize, followed by the New Year’s Reception of Leiden Law School.
This year, the Meijers Lecture, entitled 'Climate reparations: global promises versus local needs', will be delivered by Jason Rudall (Grotius) and Bernardo Almeida (VVI). They will discuss this topic from their respective areas of expertise: international law, and the more local perspective of land ownership, law, and legislation. After the Meijers Lecture, there will be an opportunity to ask questions, moderated by Irma Mosquera Valderrama.
After the Meijers Lecture and the presentation of the prizes by Jannemieke Ouwerkerk, the New Year’s Reception will get underway in the KOG restaurant. The full programme is provided below:

Meijers Lecture: ‘Climate reparations: global promises versus local needs’
|
Dr Jason Rudall is Associate Professor at the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies. His research includes international environmental and climate change law. He is the author of Responsibility for Environmental Damage (2024) and Compensation for Environmental Damage under International Law (2020). Dr Bernardo Almeida is Assistant Professor at the Van Vollenhoven Institute. He is currently researching the nexus between climate change response and land rights. Bernardo was awarded a Veni grant (2023) to study the implementation of climate change response laws and policies and their impact on the land rights of vulnerable people. |
