The Department of Research warmly invites you to the Faculty Research Day (Toogdag), this year focusing on the university-wide (interfaculty) profiling of our research strengths.
Leiden Law School is involved in 12 of the 15 research themes, spread across five research domains. Several of the faculty’s theme leads will introduce the themes during the plenary session.
After a break, everyone can join one of the five parallel sessions: three sessions about 1-2 interfaculty themes are organised by the team leads. Choose the theme that best fits with your research interests. Alternatively, you can choose to learn more about our Graduate School or how to navigate within the European funding landscape.
The sessions will be followed by a short wrap-up where we share new insights, ideas, activities, research plans, and more, from each of the five sessions. We will continue our conversations during the drinks.
The aim of the annual Toogdag is not only to participate in the sessions, but also to connect with (new) colleagues from other departments and to learn more about each other’s research. We look forward to meeting as many colleagues as possible!

Sessions
Migration & Inequalities
Migration is of all times and plays an important role in social and political debates. Inequality is a global issue in areas such as health, education, and income, and is likewise an important societal theme. These topics align with research at our faculty, such as within the ongoing research programme Reform of Social Legislation and the focus area Social Citizenship & Migration. Olaf van Vliet and Egbert Jongen jointly lead a session on these two interdisciplinary themes.

Sustainability and biodiversity & Quantum and space
Climate change, biodiversity loss, and the increasing pressure on natural resources caused by human activity require sustainable and just solutions. Sustainability has long been a university-wide theme, supported by a large network. Within our faculty, there is substantial attention to sustainability, and research will be clustered under this faculty-wide theme. Space law is embedded in our faculty within the Institute of Air and Space Law. Quantum and space recently came together during the Quantum & Law Conference. Esther Kentin and Tanja Masson-Zwaan jointly lead a session on these two interdisciplinary themes.

Security, safety and cybersecurity
Europe is confronted with threats such as military aggression, cyberattacks, and disinformation. The question is how governments at the national, European, and international levels can address these effectively and legitimately. At our faculty, researchers from all disciplines are engaged with this theme, for example in relation to combating organised crime, disinformation, or international and European regulation. Last year, the BA Cybersecurity & Cybercrime was launched. Maarten Kunst is leading this session.

Explore to the EU Funding Landscape
In this session, our funding advisor Catherine Savitsky will explain the structure of the Horizon Europe funding programme. She will offer you a step-by-step guide on how to navigate the EU Funding & Tenders Portal, analyse funding opportunities, and find the right call for your project. We will discuss how to build a consortium, the different roles you can take within large collaborative projects, and how to navigate the support offered for you within the faculty and university.
For whom?
Everyone is most welcome to join, irrespectively of your career stage. Bring your research ideas and questions, and discover your possibilities within Horizon Europe!
Meet the Graduate School
During this session, Katrien Klep (Director Graduate School) and her team will present the Graduate School of Legal Studies. We will tell you about our vision and about the various roles of the Graduate School in PhD trajectories, and how the Graduate School can support both PhD candidates and their supervisors.
For whom?
All PhD candidates and supervisors are invited to join and to bring their general or very specific questions on (graduation) procedures, supervision, training requirements, and more. In turn, we would like to hear from you what you need from the Graduate School to make PhD trajectories run as smoothly as possible!
