How can the histories of gender and sexuality in non-Western countries enrich existing theories, conceptualizations, and practices of gender and sexuality? This project takes a pedagogical approach to address this question. This pedagogical workshop is an integral part of our Erasmus+ ICM teaching exchange program, a three-year grant (2025-2027) supporting student and staff exchanges among LIAS of Leiden University, Fudan University (China), and National Taiwan University (Taiwan). This workshop brings together international scholars with extensive experience in teaching the history of gender and sexuality in different contexts. The workshop’s agenda prioritizes discussions of syllabi, course designs, teaching materials, and publication projects that will benefit students interested in gender and sexuality in history.

The speakers for the 2026 workshop are:

The workshop is co-sponsored by the Universiteit Leiden Student and Educational Affairs (SEA), Leiden China Studies program, Netherlands Research School of Gender Studies (NOG), and LUF Rombouts Fund for Chinese Studies.
