In this joint Open Science Coffee and Connect& webinar, Ari Asmi (UBL, Centre for Digital Scholarship) will tell us about the work he and others have done on persistent identifiers for laboratory instruments.
Abstract
Making instruments visible in the research landscape
Modern research is often dependent on instrumentation to transform unobservables to scientific data. Information of the instrumentation used is thus in a factor when trying to figure out how to find and re-use research datasets, understanding their context and potential, and evaluating their interoperability with other datasets and software. However, identifying which instrument was used is not yet very easy. Unlike other parts of the research landscape, such as researchers (ORCIDs), research publications (DOIs), or research organisations (RORs), the instruments do not yet have a commonly accepted persistent identification (PID) schema. The presentation explores the potential benefits of providing PIDs for instruments, the current plans and technologies to provide them in the Netherlands, and how different members of the Leiden University can contribute and benefit from this initiative.

This session takes place online and will last one hour. After the talk there will be time for questions and informal discussion. Everyone interested in thet topic is very welcome to join.

This event is part of the “Connect and …” series arranged by, and for, the Leiden University Research Data Management Community, on everything data management-related. The sessions take place every month at different days and times, so as to maximize access according to people’s different working hours, and are normally online.
