Always on, but when do you switch off?
Your mind rarely gets a break. Research deadlines. Messages. Expectations. The next thing on your list. Even when you stop working, it can be hard to switch off. What happens when you step away from it all for a few hours?
At De Mentale Wasstraat, you’ll find out through experience. Alongside other PhDs and Postdocs at Leiden University, you’ll move through a series of activities that invite you to pause, notice and try something new:
- Breathwork exercises
- Ice baths and nail boards
- Physical challenges
- Moments of calm and connection
What to expect
Step by step, you’ll experience what it feels like to get out of your head and reconnect with yourself. You can take part at your own pace. There’s nothing you need to be good at: just bring yourself and see what you discover. More than a workshop: a unique experience that stays with you and lets you step out of your head for an afternoon.

The Mentale Wasstraat is an initiative by Garage2020 that brings together science, wellbeing and immersive experiences.
It is developed with Professor Levi van Dam, an expert in youth and mental resilience; the University of Amsterdam, which provides the scientific foundation and conducts research into mental health and prevention; and Q-dance, known for creating large-scale immersive experiences.
Garage2020 leads the initiative and oversees its quality and development. Together, the partners have created an experience grounded in research that helps young people strengthen their mental resilience.
