Other streams of income

Alongside the funds that the faculties receive from the Executive Board, they can obtain extra funds from other funding bodies for their teaching and research. These extra sources of income are termed the second and third income streams.

This income is paid directly by the funder or grant provider to the faculties and institutes and is thus not included in the funds allocated in the Framework Memorandum.

Second income stream

Grants from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) form the second income stream. Applicants compete with other universities and institutions for grants from these institutions. There are many different programmes and grants for many different disciplines and scholars. These include the Veni, Vidi and Vici grants or grants for promising talent.

Third income stream

The third income stream comprises all other funds that the University receives. These include:

  • income from contract teaching and research that is provided for government, business and other organisations
  • grants from the European Union, private foundations and others
  • income from charity
  • tuition fees for degree programmes that are not registered with CROHO
