Birth leave

If your partner is pregnant, you are entitled to various forms of leave, including birth leave. You can also take leave during the period surrounding your child’s birth, so as to be sure that you are there when your child is born.

As the partner of the mother, you are entitled to various forms of leave:

  • Emergency leave during the birth

If your partner is about to give birth, you are entitled to emergency leave. You do not need to take leave hours. We do ask you to report your absence to your immediate supervisor.
  • Birth leave after the birth

After the birth, you are entitled to birth leave. You have to take up these days within four weeks of the birth of your child or the day when you child is brought home from hospital.
  • Additional birth leave

If your child is born on or after 1 July 2020, you are also entitled to additional unpaid birth leave.

Hours of birth leave

  • You are entitled to the number of hours you work per week. For instance, if you work five times six hours per week, you are entitled to five times six hours (30 hours) of leave.

  • You have to take up the birth leave hours within four weeks of the birth of your child or the day when your child comes home from hospital.

  • You can book birth leave by logging in to Remote workplace, then choose SAP Self Service and book it under ‘exceptional short-term leave’. For instruction please read this Knowlegde Item.

Weeks of additional birth leave

  • You are entitled to a maximum of five weeks of additional birth leave (five times the number of hours you work per week). You have to take this leave within six months after the birth of your child. Before you take additional birth leave, you have to first take the regular birth leave of one week.

  • Report your leave to your employer no later than four weeks before the start of your additional birth leave.

  • You can apply for additional birth leave via the Service Portal. For instruction please read this Knowledge Item.

If you are unable to apply for additional birth leave on time, for example because your child is born earlier than expected, please apply nevertheless as soon as you can.

UWV allowance for additional birth leave

Additional birth leave is unpaid leave. This has consequences for salary-based allowances.

Employer applies for UWV allowance

We will apply to UWV on your behalf for an allowance that covers your additional birth leave. To do this, we need your child’s date of birth.

UWV determines the amount of your allowance based on the Work and Care Act. The allowance amounts to 70% of your daily wage, with a maximum of 70% of the maximum daily wage. We will transfer this allowance to you via the salary administration department.
