Bonuses and allowances
Your income is structured in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO). In addition to elements such as your salary, holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus, it also includes incidental bonuses for exceptional performance or exceptional working conditions. Allowances for overtime only apply to non-academic staff in salary scale 10 or lower.
Bonuses for exceptional performance
Your performance is assessed in an annual Performance and Development Interview. If your performance has been assessed as satisfactory, you will be offered a periodic salary increase, unless you have reached the maximum of your salary scale. Your performance may in some cases be so exceptional that the University will reward you with a bonus.
Extra periodic increase
In case of exceptionally good or excellent performance, an extra periodic increase may be granted.
If your performance is very good or even excellent, you may be awarded a performance allowance for the duration of one year. In exceptional circumstances, this allowance may be awarded for a longer period. The allowance can be withdrawn if the reasons for it no longer apply.
Labour market allowance
If you are sought after on the labour market or if you could earn more in a similar position elsewhere, the University may grant you a temporary allowance in order to recruit or retain you. The labour market allowance is granted for a predetermined period of time. Once this period ends the allowance may be granted again. The allowance can also be withdrawn if the reasons for it no longer apply.
If on the instructions of your immediate supervisor you act as a substitute for a period of more than 30 days in a position with a higher salary scale, you will receive an allowance for the duration of the substitution period. This substitution allowance is equal to the difference between your salary and the salary you would receive if you were appointed to the substitution position. In case of partial substitution, the allowance is calculated pro rata. You will not receive this allowance if acting as a substitute is included in your duties.
Exceptional allowance on other grounds
In exceptional cases you may be awarded an allowance on other grounds that those described above. This allowance may be withdrawn if the reasons for it no longer apply.
If on the instructions of your immediate supervisor you work more than your contracted hours, you are considered to be working overtime. In principle, overtime work is compensated for in time. If you occupy a non-academic position in scale 10 or lower, overtime work is in principle compensated with extra leave hours. You will be compensated for overtime hours in leave hours, with an additional leave surcharge according to the following scheme:
- 25% on Monday to Friday between 07.00 and 18.00 hrs
- 50% on Monday to Friday before 07.00 or after 18.00 hrs
- 50% on Saturdays between 00.00 and 16.00 hrs
- 100% on Saturdays after 16.00 hrs
- 100% on Sundays and public holidays
If partial or full compensation in leave hours is impossible, you will receive a monetary compensation for the extra hours and/or surcharge. You may therefore receive a combination of extra leave hours and monetary compensation. You will not be granted an allowance for overtime for less than half an hour contingent on your working hours. You can apply for an overtime allowance via a claim form to be obtained from your HR department.
On-call and standby
If your position requires you to frequently be on call outside your regular working hours and this is set out in writing, you may be entitled to an on-call and standby allowance. This only applies to non-academic positions in salary scale 10 or lower.
The on-call allowance amounts to a maximum of 10% of the hourly wage for salary scale 3 grade 9. If you are in a lower salary scale the allowance amounts to 10% of your hourly wage. If you are not only on stand-by but actually have to physically be present, your allowance will be raised to 35% of your hourly wage. This allowance is also subject to the maximum hourly wage of salary scale 3 grade 9. This allowance will be paid out in addition to your regular salary.
If your position requires you to work irregular hours, you may be entitled to an allowance. This irregular hours allowance is only granted to employees in non-academic positions in scale 10 or lower.
Irregular hours refer to all hours from Monday to Friday between 20.00 and 07.00 hrs and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The allowance amounts to a percentage of your hourly wage:
- 40% for hours on Monday to Friday between 20.00 and 07.00 hrs
- 40% for hours on Saturday
- 75% for hours on Sunday and public holidays
The hourly wage for this allowance may not exceed that of scale 7, grade 10. There are specific circumstances under which the allowance will not be granted. For more information, see the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
When you reach 12 ½, 25, 40 or 50 years of service, you will be awarded a long-service bonus. This bonus amounts to:
- 25% of your monthly income for a 12 ½ year service
- 70% of your monthly income for a 25-year service
- 100% of your monthly income for a 40 or 50 year service
The bonus for a 25 and 40-year service is tax-free. Does the long-service bonus amount to more than the monthly salary, such as due to a reduction in working hours shortly before the service anniversary? In that case, the portion of the bonus exceeding the monthly salary is subject to taxation. Your monthly income consists of your monthly salary with the addition of specific allowances.
