Sharing and sending files

If you wish to share files with colleagues within or outside the university, you can save these files in the cloud via SURFdrive or Dropbox. If your files are too large to be send by e-mail, you can use FileSender.

SURFdrive is a cloud storage service for Dutch education and research. It is comparable to services such as Dropbox, with the difference that with SURFdrive, your data is stored in the Netherlands. You have access to SURFdrive with your ULCN account, but you can also grant guest users access to your files. To use SURFdrive optimally, you have to install some software. The software required is available via the additional software package of your workplace. You can also install it yourself on your smart phone or tablet. For more information, see the website of SURFdrive.

As with SURFdrive, you can also save files in a public cloud environment using Dropbox. The Dropbox servers are located in the US. This means that they are subject to the Patriot Act and the American Security Services may gain access to your data. Dropbox itself can also access your data. We therefore advise you to limit your use of Dropbox to public information. Confidential data and files are better saved in SURFdrive.

You can apply for Dropbox for your workplace via ISSC. Your application will be assessed by your ICT contact person.

FileSender is a SURFnet service. You can use FileSender to send files (including large files) via your web browser. It is comparable to WeTransfer with the difference that in FileSender, the files are sent and saved via Dutch servers. This means you can send your files in a safer way.

FileSender is especially intended for staff and students in higher education. As a university employee you can log in to FileSender with your ULCN account. You do not need to apply for this service.

Other tools for sharing files

If you find a service for sharing or sending files that is not listed here, you may be able to access it via SURFconext. SURFconext provides access to more than 50 tools and supporting ICT services offered by other parties. You can access these services and tools with your ULCN account. If you use a specific service on a regular basis, you may be able to have this service included in SURFconext. For more information please contact your information manager.
