Roman reenactors surprise children in the Wilhelmina children's hospital
Every year, a delegation of Roman 'archaeo-interpreters' from Archeon visits children at the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital. This year, Jonathan Ouellet is also part of the group. In his daily life, he is a PhD candidate at the Faculty of Archaeology. In his spare time, he engages with the past as a Roman re-enactor. Why does he do this? 'History doesn't just belong in books and museums,' Jonathan believes. 'There is something very powerful about hearing a Roman cornu, seeing the armour up close, and talking to someone who has stepped right out of the past. Bringing that experience to children in the hospital is very rewarding. We give them something fun, and unusual; They get to be a kid again.
