Malpractice (whistleblowing)

If you suspect malpractice, please report this internally to your supervisor. If you would rather not report it directly, you can contact the confidential counsellor for malpractice.

What can the confidential counsellor for malpractice do?

You can contact the confidential counsellor for malpractice if you suspect malpractice. This may involve any of the following:

  • Violations of the law
  • An imminent threat to public health
  • An imminent threat to people‚Äôs safety
  • An imminent threat to the environment
  • An imminent or potential threat to the proper functioning of the organisation as a result of improper conduct or neglect

The confidential counsellor can guide you, advise you and refer you to the right person/department. He or she can also file an anonymous complaint on your behalf. The confidential counsellor is appointed by the Executive Board and is accountable to the Board.

For whom?

The confidential counsellor is available for all Leiden University employees and students.

Committee on Whistleblowing

The Committee on Whistleblowing investigates reports of suspected or proven malpractice and issues recommendations to the Executive Board. The Regulation on Whistleblowers contains information on the precise procedure. The identity of the person reporting malpractice will not be revealed without the explicit permission of the person concerned.

Confidentiality guaranteed

The confidential counsellor for malpractice and the Committee on Whistleblowing, as well as their respective secretaries, are bound by a duty of confidentiality. All information is treated in the strictest confidence.
