Confidential Counsellors

Leiden University has three types of confidential counsellors. Together they ensure that the University, in its role as organisation, employer and educator treats its employees and students fairly. Fair treatment means being reliable and honest, open and clear, involved, solution-oriented and respectful. You can contact one of our confidential counsellors if you have complaints or problems regarding unacceptable behaviour, personnel issues or academic integrity.

Confidential Counsellor for Unacceptable Behaviour

If you are the victim of unacceptable behaviour, such as sexual intimidation, aggression, violence or discrimination, you can contact the Confidential Counsellor for Unacceptable Behaviour. 

When to contact the Confidential Counsellor for Unacceptable Behaviour?

  • For advice and support regarding your complain or problem, both to try and solve the problem and to file a complaint
  • For guidance if you wish to use mediation or bring your case to the attention of the Complaints Committee
  • For referral to experts in preventing or combatting unacceptable behaviour

You can discuss the problem in all confidentiality, and together with the confidential counsellor look for possible solutions. If you do not readily find a solution, you can file a complaint with the Complaints Committee for unacceptable Behaviour. Such complaints may lead to disciplinary measures being taken against the defendant. The Confidential Counsellor can advise you and help you file a complaint.

The Confidential Counsellor also advises the Executive Board on how to prevent and combat unacceptable behaviour and he or she reports to the Board on the number of reports and complaints. 

Confidential Counsellor for Personnel Issues

As an employee, you may at some point run into questions or problems in your working relationship with the University. If you do not succeed in resolving these in consultation with your immediate supervisor, you can contact the Confidential Counsellor for Personnel Issues. 

When to contact the Confidential Counsellor for Personnel Issues?

  • For problems (communication or other) with your immediate supervisor and/or colleagues 
  • In case of changes in your work or the organisation, possibly as a result of a reorganisation, that have consequences that you believe to be incorrect or unjust
  • In case of malpractices in your immediate working environment that you do not dare to address openly

The Confidential Counsellor will try to address these problems and help you find a solution. The Confidential Counsellor is available for anyone who works for the University. The Confidential Counsellor does not act as mediator and never interferes with the normal course of justice. Nor does he or she act as legal adviser in objection and appeal procedures.

Confidential Counsellor for Academic Integrity

The Confidential Counsellor is your first point of contact if you suspect a violation of the Code of Conduct for Academic Practice. This may involve any of the following:

  • Faking, falsifying or deliberately misinterpreting research results
  • Deliberately misusing statistical and other methods
  • Plagiarism of publications
  • Ignoring or failing to recognise co-authors, or unjustly claiming to be an author or co-author
  • Not correcting errors following justified criticism or covering up the misconduct of one’s colleagues

When to contact the Confidential Counsellor for Academic Integrity?

  • For questions or complaints regarding academic integrity
  • For assistance in attempts at mediation or other amicable settlement methods
  • For advice and guidance in submitting a complaint to the Committee

The Confidential Counsellor has a duty of confidentiality and is a member of the Academic Integrity Committee. In addition, you always have the option of directly submitting a complaint to the Academic Integrity Committee.
