Virtual Research Environment contributes to academic integrity in data management

The new Code of Conduct for Academic Integrity is effective in the Netherlands as of 1 October. The use of a Virtual Research Environment (VRE) helps Leiden researchers to comply with academic integrity standards. A VRE is a tool that enables researchers in Leiden and elsewhere to collaborate on a research project.

Research integrity

The Code of Conduct affirms that research integrity is based on five principles: honesty, thoroughness, transparency, independence and responsibility. These principles have been specified in concrete standards which any researcher, whether working individually or in a team, must adhere to. They have been formulated to guide each phase of academic research practice: study design, implementation, record-keeping and reporting, assessment/ peer review and communication. Some of these standards concern the way researchers manage their data.

Virtual Research Environment

Leiden researchers are able to make use of a Virtual Research Environment during their research. In a VRE, researchers can share, edit and enrich data and documents in a safe, transparent and reliable way. A VRE is also an excellent instrument to keep track of project management. The VRE is a restricted-access environment that is accessible 24/7 around the world for team members, including non-Leiden researchers. The standard data storage capacity is 10 GB, but can be increased on request.

The VRE is a service offered by Leiden University Libraries (UBL) and is used for several purposes by the various faculties. Mareike Boom (FdR), Erik Deul (FWN) and Koen de Ceuster (FGW) explain in a short video how a VRE can be used for research purposes.

If you would like to find out more about what a VRE can offer you, please contact the UBL’s VRE expert Patrick Gouw.
