Leiden University advises students to leave Hong Kong

Leiden University is advising its students to leave Hong Kong and return to the Netherlands. This is due to the worsening situation there.

Protesters have been demonstrating for several months already against a new bill that would allow extraditions to mainland China. These demonstrations have regularly led to violent clashes. In consultation with its Chief Security Officer, Leiden University is therefore urgently advising its students to return to the Netherlands.

All Leiden University students in Hong Kong have already received an email containing this advice. The International Relations Office will help them change their flight, if necessary. They can also call an emergency number at any time, day or night.

The situation in Hong Kong is not yet deemed to be an immediate crisis. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently issuing a yellow warning [in Dutch], which means people should be extra vigilant. However, given the current circumstances, Leiden University advises returning to the Netherlands.
