Dr. Niels Laurens as new Executive Director at FGGA and FdA

On Tuesday September 8th, the Executive Board of Leiden University appointed Dr. Niels Laurens as Executive Director at the faculties of Governance and Global Affairs and Archaeology.

This combined position has been filled ad interim by Jacqueline Schut during the past 9 months. Both faculty boards are very grateful to Jacqueline for her efforts over the past months, which meant a lot of extra work due to the measures related to the coronavirus.

Niels Laurens will work 3 days a week for FGGA and 2 days for the Faculty of Archaeology. He will start working for FGGA on September 15 and start working for FdA on November 1.

Niels Laurens has been working at Leiden University as an institute manager at the Leiden Institute of Physics (LION) since 2015 and became a project leader at the University-wide Leiden Research Support programme in 2019. Before that he worked in both research and management at the VU University and Philips Research. Niels Laurens studied Physics at Leiden University.

The faculty boards of FGGA and FdA are very pleased with the appointment of Niels Laurens. Dean Erwin Muller (FGGA): "Niels knows the University through and through and works as a manager and director at a very renowned institute within our University. We can put his knowledge, experience, and drive to good use to help both faculties through the corona crisis in the short term and, in the longer term, to make both faculties future-proof. We look forward to his arrival.”

Jan Kolen, Dean of FdA, continues: "Niels comes from a research-intensive environment where high-quality research is integrated with the educational programmes. Niels is therefore familiar with the challenges facing the FdA. Furthermore, he can use his experience to improve our project administration, so that the support for our research can be further expanded and strengthened.”
