Leiden students give commentary on games live on Twitch

Three Leiden students will be sharing their knowledge of history while playing video games. The livestreams are part of the ‘Streaming the Past’ project and will be available on the popular streaming platform Twitch. The first livestream will be on Thursday 20 May.

In ‘Streaming the Past’ the Leiden students will take viewers with them on a journey into the past while playing historical video games. They hope that these games will be a fun and interactive way of teaching young people about different periods and events in history.  

First livestream

Sign in to Twitch.tv on Thursday 20 May at 15.00 for the kick-off. In this episode the students and Leiden archaeologist Angus Mol will talk about the project and will play a historical version of Among Us, a game that is hugely popular on Twitch. 

NWA grant

‘Streaming the Past’ is an initiative of a group of researchers at the Faculties of Humanities and Archaeology, in partnership with the VALUE Foundation. The researchers' aim with this project is to gain knowledge about science communication via digital channels such as Twitch. The project was awarded an NWA science communication grant.


Leiden University is the first in the world to play an active part on the Twitch livestream platform. Millions of people come together every day on Twitch to watch streams. The streams give gamers and vloggers live commentary and viewers can chat with one another. 

From the ancient Greeks to the Russian revolution

Students were sought for this project who had an affinity wth history and who liked to game. From Thursday, students Eva Kruijt (Research Master's in Arts and Literature), Nina Mohammed Bagher Beik (Bachelor's in Security Studies) and Sophie Paauw (Bachelor's in Archaeology) will be playing a range of different games. 

Sophie plays such games as the popular Assassin’s Creed in the ‘Stealthing through History' series. This series covers the Russian and French revolutions, but also includes the Renaissance and the Greek Bronze Age.
