Outcome public support survey Doelen complex residents is negative for the development of Humanities Campus
Leiden University has taken note of the results of the public support survey conducted by housing corporation De Sleutels among the residents of the 58 rental appartments in the Doelen complex. The findings show that the majority of the residents of the Doelencomplex are not willing to move to alternative housing locations in the city centre.
The university wanted to purchase the land from De Sleutels to create a Humanities Campus on the site. The plans include the new building for the Faculty of Humanities with a central city square where staff, students and residents of Leiden can come together. The university has made a generous offer to the residents of the Doelen complex in the form of alternative housing, relocation allowances and rent reductions. Now that the majority of residents have indicated that they do not wish to move, housing corporation De Sleutels has informed the university that it will not be cooperating with the sale of the land of the Doelen complex.
Follow-up steps
Leiden University regrets this outcome. This negative outcome has no consequences for the renovation of Cluster Zuid en Cluster Noord, a part of the Humanities Campus where work has already started. End of August, the university will enter into consultation with the municipality about possible follow-up steps.
