Journal established at LIACS reaches world top

An impact factor of 3.2 in the Web of Science journal index. And in the first 10% of Elsevier's Scopus index. The International Journal of Multimedia Information Retrieval (IJMIR), founded at the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS), has become one of the most important multimedia journals.

Michael Lew, professor of deep learning, started IJMIR in 2011.  As editor-in-chief, he wanted to create a journal that could compete with the best peer-reviewed multimedia journals worldwide. To achieve this, he formed the editorial board with the most reputable scientists from the multimedia research community. They were typically senior members of the ACM SIG Multimedia (SIGMM), the leading scientific forum for researchers, engineers and practitioners in all aspects of multimedia computing.

The top of scientific multimedia

The big challenge was to reach a top impact level among the journals supported by ACM Multimedia. This has now been achieved, and this is according to the Web of Science Journal Citation Reports: a highly reputable scientific index. Moreover, based on the Scopus index, IJMIR achieves a citation score of 5.3 and is ranked ninth of all 314 Multimedia journals. A fine achievement of which LIACS is particularly proud.
