Jacobijn Gussekloo new Dean of the Honours Academy

As of 19 April 2022, professor Jacobijn Gussekloo has been appointed Dean of the Honours Academy at Leiden University. Gussekloo is professor of Primary Care and director of the master’s programme Vitality and Ageing. Gussekloo succeeds professor Jos Schaeken, who has been Dean since March 2020.

Academic career

Gussekloo studied medicine at Leiden University. After that, she combined her work as general practitioner with a position as senior researcher with the Leiden 85-plus Study at LUMC. Here she studied the determinants of successful ageing. She obtained her PhD by conducting various studies of the cognitive decline of elderly people.

Jacobijn Gussekloo works at the LUMC as professor of Primary Care

In 2008, Gussekloo was appointed professor of Primary Care. She now works at the department of Public Health and Primary Care as well as the department of Internal Medicine, section Geriatric Medicine, at the LUMC. With this interdisciplinary research team, she wishes to contribute to the well-being of the elderly, both within and outside of the hospital.

In addition to scientific research, Gussekloo is involved in education. Since 2016 she has been director of the international, small-scale LUMC master Vitality and Ageing. This program focuses on the biological, individual and societal aspects of ageing.

The interdisciplinarity and social involvement of this master's programme go together well with the principles of the Honours Academy, which, as a testing ground for educational innovation, challenges students to deepen and broaden their knowledge and skills, while simultaneously contributing to society.

Honours education

At the Honours Academy, high school students, bachelor’s students and master’s students receive extracurricular education in addition to their regular studies. Honours education is multidisciplinary, personal and future-oriented. The Honours Academy aims to be a ‘testing ground’ and thus to promote educational innovation throughout the university.

The following programmes are organised by the Honours Academy.
