Darinka Piqani and Moritz Jesse lecture at Charles University Prague

Darinka Piqani and Moritz Jesse, both from the Europa Institute at Leiden Law School, each gave two lectures as part of the advanced course 'European Constitutionalism' hosted by Professor Helena Hoffmanová of the Department of Constitutional Law at the Faculty of Law of Charles University, Prague.

In her lecture 'European constitutionalism and the internal market: Is there space for Member State autonomy?' on 11 April 2022, Dr Piqani explored the tension between the purely internal rule and its interpretation by the Court of Justice and the autonomy of Member States. In her second lecture 'Judicial reforms and the rule of law: Lessons from candidate countries (the case of Albania)' that took place on 12 April 2022, Dr Piqani gave an overview of the EU driven 2016 judicial reform in Albania – an EU candidate country – and assessed its impact on constitutional justice and fundamental rights.

Dr Jesse lectured on 19 and 20 April. In his first lecture 'The constitutional aspects of EU citizenship: What is left of the original dreams?”, he reflected on the constitutional dimension of EU citizenship and its legal interpretation by the Court of Justice of the EU. In his second lecture entitled 'Europe after Covid: An appraisal of potential good and bad changes brought by the pandemic', Dr Jesse concluded that in contrast to earlier crises affecting the free movement of persons within the EU, it is not likely that the Covid-19 pandemic will have a significant impact on free movement rights in the EU.
