Open day at space research institute at Leiden Bio Science Park

SRON, the Netherlands Institute for Space Research, is holding an open day on Sunday 25 September. It has had a branch at the Leiden Bio Science Park since 2021 and works closely with Leiden University.

SRON develops technology and advanced space instruments and uses them to pursue fundamental astrophysical research, Earth science and exoplanetary research.

On the open day there will be interesting talks and educational demonstrations and activities for adults and children alike. Visitors can take a look at the new building and mechanics who design space instruments will be on hand to show their place of work. Children will be able to do a spot of soldering, see themselves in infrared, make their own spectrometer, shout an audio spectrum, attend a lecture especially for children and take a space photo.

Demonstrations will show visitors big and small all that goes into making super-sensitive instruments for space. And inside the building models can be seen of impressive telescopes and satellites that SRON has worked on. For the full programme for the open day, see the SRON website.

Collaboration

SRON works closely with Leiden University and Delft University of Technology. It has had a branch at the Leiden Bio Science Park since 2021. Leiden benefits from the new technologies but SRON also benefits from knowledge from Leiden. Students and PhD candidates from Leiden and Delft enhance SRON’s work and in turn gain access to top-notch facilities, high-quality instrumentation and major research projects.
