Animals in fashion: what is portrayed on children’s clothing?

Children’s clothes are full of cute, fun and cool animals. Researcher Michiel Hooykaas investigated which animals were most prevalent, to see how cultural product can influence the knowledge of biodiversity.

On the 3.000 pieces of clothing Hooykaas and his team examined, 20 percent an animal was portrayed. Most often, these were mammals or exotic animals. ‘But even in the groups there were most often represented, like mammals and exotic animals, only a select group is shown,’ says Hooykaas in his interview with Naturalis Biodiversity Center.
