Gorlaeus Building construction workers spotlighted at highest point celebration
On Thursday 8 December, the project teams of Leiden University and Heijmans Utiliteit, together with the construction workers of the project, celebrated reaching the highest point of phase 2a of the Gorlaeus Building. An important milestone in the construction and traditionally the moment to put the construction workers in the spotlight and thank them for their work.
Pannenbier
As is traditional, to celebrate reaching the highest point, beer was being served. 'Pannenbier', that is. An old tradition organised by the project owner. The term 'pannenbier' refers to the roof tiles that can be laid when the highest point is reached. Part of the tradition is raising the flag.
The project, which started in summer 2021, is still on schedule due to the efforts of the construction workers. Given market developments, this shouldn't be taken for granted; less staff is available and building materials are harder to obtain.
Planning
The roof and facades will be closed by the end of this year. In January 2023, work inside the new building will start: internal walls, ceilings, screeds. Completion is scheduled for the end of 2023. Then, the Gorlaeus Building will have a new main entrance, a brasserie, library, a science bar for the study associations, extra teaching rooms and laboratories.
Meanwhile, tours have started so staff can see what their workplace will look like. Tours will continue in 2023.
