Five activities to look forward to this semester

A fresh semester means a fresh faculty calendar. There is plenty to do at the faculty again in the coming months. Five interesting activities are listed below.

1. During the Dies Natalis, Professor Beatrice Gruendler, an expert in Oriental manuscripts, will receive an honorary doctorate. In honour of the expert Oriental manuscripts, the lecture Why Poetry? A Sufi Response will be organised on 7 February, followed by the workshop Wisdom literature in the Islamicate Middle Ages on 9 February.

2. What role did animals play in Dutch-Indonesian literature? That question is the focus of the lecture afternoon of the Dutch-Indonesian Literature Working Group on 17 February. The afternoon will conclude with the presentation of the book Animals in Dutch Travel Writing 1800-present, written by Rick Honings and Esther Op de Beek. (Lectures in Dutch)

3. Leids Historisch Dispuut Merlijn organises six lectures, waarin wordt aangehaakt bij de actualiteit van het geschiedkundig onderzoek. Op 1 maart komt Frans Blom spreken over theatermakers en de Amsterdamse Schouwburg.

4. Internationally, all eyes are on the depot of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. This  depot is the world's first publicly accessible art depot, bringing the museum's backstage to front of stage. Director Ina Klaassen talks more about this in the last Museum Talk of this year on 8 March.

5. Tired after a long working day? Every last Thursday of the month, Practicum Musicae students give a free concert in the Lokhorst Church. An ideal time to unwind.

Bonus tip. Looking for a fun activity for children? A new series of children's lectures by the Museum Youth University will start from 12 March. Leiden humanities scholars are collaborating on the series at Boerhaave and the National Museum of Antiquities. (Lectures in Dutch)

The above activities are just a small selection from the total programme on offer. If you would like to see more just check out the faculty agenda.
