Summer School 'The European Union, the United Nations and Global Governance'

Applications are now open for the Summer School ‘The European Union, the United Nations and Global Governance’ (12 - 23 June 2023) for Master-level and PhD students. The activity is supported by the European Union’s Jean Monnet programme (Erasmus+).

Successful participants will join a talented and motivated group of graduate-level students (Master's and PhD) for an ambitious two-week programme that includes engaging lectures, seminars and networking opportunities, as well as in-person visits to international institutions.

Two week programme with interactive lectures and seminars

The Summer School offers a series of interactive lectures and seminars by well-known academics and (former) practitioners, familiarising students with the inner workings of the European Union (EU) and the United Nations (UN) and interactions between these two organisations in the context of global governance.

The two-week programme starts with lectures on salient topics related to European integration and the work of the United Nations, such as

  • Global Security Governance;
  • The EU in the UN;
  • International Financial Cooperation and Stability;
  • Migration Governance;
  • The Role of the G20 in Global Affairs;
  • International Climate Protection and Energy Governance;
  • European Fiscal and Monetary Policies.

Visit important international institutions in The Hague and Brussels

Summer School participants will also visit important international institutions in The Hague, such as the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, the International Court of Justice, and the International Criminal Court.

The last three days of the Summer School take place in Brussels, where students visit institutions such as the European Parliament, the European Council, and the European External Action Service.

'The Summer School 'The European Union, the United Nations and Global Governance' I joined last year is an invaluable experience for understanding the dynamics surrounding current global and regional events. Outstanding leading experts have covered topics from migration to climate governance from both a global and EU perspective. Their knowledge proved of immense value to further complement my ongoing studies. Lastly, visits to critical EU and international organisations such as the ICC and the OPCW are a must for those seeking a career in this field.' (Marco Iazzetta, student at SOAS, University of London)
