Changing the world (a little bit)
Geopolitics, climate, pandemics, migration, AI, gender politics: today’s global world changes in multiple dimensions. How to govern these changes? That was the theme of the second international conference of Leiden University’s Global Transformations and Governance Challenges (GTGC) programme, held on 7-9 June 2023 in The Hague.
The conference assembled 270 participants to discuss both traditional international organisations and various new forms of global governance. Eighty academic papers with authors from twenty countries and multiple disciplinary affiliations examined the effectiveness and legitimacy of different ways to handle planetary problems. In addition, policymakers and activists joined the conference in roundtables to debate the future of multilateralism, international sanctions, multi-level governance of climate, and local movements for global change. Informal conversations continued over lunches and receptions.
Conference programme coordinator, Valentina Carraro, is pleased with the result: ‘Our conference brought together scholars and practitioners from very diverse backgrounds and disciplines, leading to highly enriching conversations on how to better govern the challenges posed by current global developments’. GTGC convener, Jan Aart Scholte, adds: ‘Our conferences contribute importantly to developing Leiden University as a leading site of interdisciplinary and practice-oriented research on governing global challenges. We look forward to the third GTGC conference next year!’
