NWO has rewarded CODELAB researchers for new startup idea

The new startup idea of Arko Ghosh and his colleagues at CODELAB concerns seamless brain assessments using day-to-day digital interactions. The study aims to make algorithms tuned to consumer-grade brain recordings and test the market readiness for this technology. In order to achieve this, the researchers have received the new Take-off grant from NWO.

Timely assessment of brain activity is critical for neurological health care. However, regular brain activity assessments are still out of reach due to the extensive technical support needed apart from the expensive hardware. While the consumer market now offers solutions for low-cost hardware, the technical difficulty in assessing brain functions remains largely unaddressed.

In the study of cognitive psychologist Arko Ghosh, algorithms combine brain recordings with day-to-day smartphone touchscreen interactions resulting in a new form of neurobehavioral signal which carries rich and interpretable information on brain functions. This study aims to make algorithms tuned to consumer-grade brain recordings and test the market readiness for this technology.

Ghosh: 'We are excited about this grant, as it is going to help accomplish one of the key missions of CODELAB – to make a real impact with our learnings from real-world behavior.  This grant is going to help us test the market potential of a deep-tech company idea that can fundamentally alter how we assess brain functions.'

Cluster Commit2data

31 feasibility studies and 10 early phase route projects can start with the spring 2023 round of Take-off. Academic and innovative starters can use the feasibility study to research whether their inventive ideas can be commercially or societally applied. If this turns out to be achievable they get the opportunity to start an enterprise. Four projects were awarded again this time within the Commit2Data cluster, including: 'Seamless brain assessments using day-to-day digital interactions' - Arko Ghosh.
