‘We’re in this together’: watch the aftermovie of the Academia in Motion symposium and Town Hall

From the future of academic publishing and reshaping PhD trajectories to parenting during an academic career, leadership, societal engagement and quality in academic work: during the Academia in Motion Symposium and Town Hall, colleagues from across the university reflected on how to create an open knowledge community in which everyone’s contributions to shared goals are recognised.

The Academia in Motion programme, focused on Open Science and Recognition & Rewards, has been underway for several years. The movement is increasingly taking shape in both policy and practice, within faculties, across the university, and in national and international contexts. On 12 May, colleagues from across Leiden University came together to share experiences, reflect on progress and engage in conversations about the future of the programme and academic culture more broadly.

Through interactive workshops and plenary dialogue, key insights emerged throughout the day. These included the importance of prioritising based on strategic goals, leading through collaboration and example, and creating culture change through openness, experimentation and dialogue. As reflected in the closing remarks, much has already been set in motion and meaningful change requires continued time, openness and commitment. This was not the end of a conversation, but another step in an ongoing movement.
