Marcellus Ubbink reappointed as Scientific Director of the LIC
Marcellus Ubbink has been reappointed as Scientific Director of the Leiden Institute of Chemistry (LIC) until 1 July 2030. ‘In the coming years, I want to focus on maintaining and developing our excellent teaching and research.’
Ubbink is proud of the institute. That's because of the high standard of teaching and research, but above all due to the friendly atmosphere and excellent collaboration. ‘That is so important for your job satisfaction.’
Building ambitions for the future together
Over the past four years, Ubbink, together with the LIC’s management team, has already implemented a host of plans. ‘For example, we have improved the gender balance among academic staff and are working to reduce the time taken to complete a PhD.’
One of the things he will focus on in the coming years are the promising developments in the research themes Chemistry for Health and Chemistry for a Sustainable Society. ‘There are now more spin-offs and direct collaborations with companies,’ says Ubbink. ‘These stem directly from our fundamental research, and that combination has the potential to grow even further.’ He also sees opportunities for closer collaboration with the other institutes of the Faculty of Science.
