Weekend of Science: discover how science works in Leiden and The Hague
Do you understand what your dog is trying to tell you? How does NATO work? And can you tell different smells apart? On 3 and 4 October, you can investigate these questions yourself during the Weekend of Science in Leiden and The Hague.
Leiden University, TU Delft, Open Universiteit, LUMC, mboRijnland and Hogeschool Leiden are joining forces to offer a morning (3 October) and an afternoon (4 October) full of scientific discoveries. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.
3 October: Science Market in Leiden
During the celebrations of Leidens Ontzet, you can immerse yourself in research at the Science Market. Discover what a wolf has eaten by examining a real wolf scat. Test how carefully you can perform surgery with our giant Operation game. Create a podcast or drawing about your favourite plant. And what do you do when facing a difficult task or situation? Join our Giant Resilience Race game and discover, through short activities and games, tips to help you when things do not go to plan, and how support from others can make a difference.

4 October: Weekend of Science at University Campus Spui in The Hague
There is plenty to discover in our building in The Hague. At the Mathematics Workshop, you can cut, fold and solve puzzles. Can you make a star with a single cut? You will discover how much mathematics is hidden in things you can make and try yourself. You can also take part in a court case. For example, is it permissible to rescue an animal from a cage that is far too small? In the mock courtroom, you can take on the role of a lawyer or public prosecutor. Which arguments will you use to defend the defendant or, alternatively, to argue for a sentence?
Are you interested in animals or the world around you? Learn how to recognise whether a dog is happy, angry or stressed. Or join a mini lecture on NATO and discover why countries work together to protect one another. You can also learn to navigate like a pirate, go on an expedition inside your mind, and find out whether you learn faster than AI. Ask questions, share ideas and try things out for yourself.
From department store to a building full of science
Your parents or grandparents may once have shopped here: University Campus Spui is located in the former V&D department store building, in the centre of The Hague. Since this year, it has become a place where students, researchers and organisations learn and work together. Leiden University, TU Delft, Open Universiteit, LUMC and Universities of the Netherlands share their knowledge in this building and collaborate on issues such as health, security and law. They are also keen to share this knowledge with the city. During the Weekend of Science, the doors will be open and visitors can explore for themselves.
