Data storage

Your options for data storage may vary depending on factors such as size and sensitivity of the data or collaboration with partners outside the university. We are all responsible for data protection. To keep (personal) data as secure as possible, the university has established an information security policy.

The information security policy (Dutch only) sets out how the university supports you so you can work in a privacy-proof way

Cloud storage

If you are looking for storage space with the option to share files in the cloud, or you need back-up software, take a look at the following options:

  1. The easiest option is to use OneDrive via Leiden University’s Office 365 licence. All members of staff can use this software to store their files securely.
  2. You can also work together with someone from Leiden or another university using SURFdrive. SURFdrive can handle up to 500 GB (gigabytes). It stores your data securely in the Netherlands and does not share them with others.

Bulk storage

If you need bulk storage for your project or research data, you can use the university’s network for bulk storage. You can request this storage space in blocks of 1 TB (terabyte) by contacting the ICT specialist at your faculty or department.

Research data services catalogue

The research data services catalogue contains information on all the facilities for data (storage) for your research. Consult the catalogue for example when:

  • writing a project proposal
  • requesting storage capacity
  • thinking about archiving
