Research assessments

Leiden University frequently reviews the quality of its research. We do this by means of both internal and external assessments. Read how we monitor and assess the quality of our research.

Leiden protocol for research assessments

To monitor quality, every six years an external committee is invited to assess the research of all Leiden University research institutes and units. Every year institutes evaluate their progress on the recommended actions in consultation with their faculty board. In particular cases institutes can conduct a midterm review, as explained in the Leiden protocol for research assessments.

Standard Evaluation Protocol

Leiden University research assessments are based on the Standard Evaluation Protocol (SEP). The SEP is set by the Universities of the Netherlands, The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).

Research assessment in 2018

In 2018 all the research within the Faculty of Humanities will be evaluated. This will take place on a per-institute basis. Each institute will write a self-assessment report, which will not only look back on the goals and results achieved in the research area between 2012 and 2017, but will also look ahead to the next six years. At the end of 2018, ‘site visits’ will take place, during which external assessment committees will visit Leiden University and assess the quality and relevance of the research and the strategic plans of the institutes. These committees will then write a report, which will be presented to the Executive Board.

Most of the national research schools will also be evaluated in 2018. This will be done by the coordinating faculties.

Within each institute, a coordination team will work on the research assessment. The Faculty coordinator is Marcel Belderbos. You are welcome to contact him if you have any questions about the assessment.
