Help for prospective Leiden academics

Are you looking for a grant to come to Leiden? Here you will find an overview funding opportunities available and steps to take.

Step 1 - Why Leiden? Assess the match

To obtaine research funding a good match between you and the host institution of choice is essential. Therefore finding a group to join, is the first step to take. Browse our website and contact a prospective supervisor or scientific director of an institute you would like to join to discuss this.

Step 2 – What kind of funding is available?

  • PhD research

There are not many PhD scholarships available in the Netherlands, because of the national funding system. All available PhD scholarships and more information on the system can be found on the Study in Holland website.
  • PostDoctoral research

    • Both our national funder (NWO) and the European Commission offer postdoctoral fellowships and individual grants to set up a research group. Do take into account the Marie Curie mobility rules.
  • Short research visit to Leiden.

    Look for opportunities at:
  • Organising a meeting in Leiden

Leiden hosts the renowned Lorentz Center, which has an open procedure for proposals.
  • Specific funds

Ask your prospective supervisor or scientific director for other specific funds in your field.

Step 3 – Get support for applying for funding

The research funding information on this website is only accessible to Leiden academics with a so-called ULCN account. However, you will get full access to all available information and support, if you are going to prepare a proposal with Leiden University as your host institution. Please contact a prospective supervisor or the scientific director of the institute you would like to join to discuss this, before you approach advisory support.
