Holland Scholarship - Outgoing

The Holland Scholarship (outgoing) is intended for talented Leiden University Bachelor's and Master's students who want to study, undertake research, or do an internship at an institution or company outside the EEA.

Leiden University travel policy

You may only go abroad for study-related activities to destinations to which travel is permitted according to Leiden University’s travel policy. See the Study abroad - Health and Safety page for details.

Please note the following when applying for a scholarship:

  • If travel to your destination is not yet permitted according to Leiden University’s travel policy, you must still apply for a scholarship according to the deadlines. Do not delay your application waiting for the travel status to change.  
  • You may only go abroad if travel to your destination is permitted on your day of departure according to Leiden University’s travel policy.
  • You will only receive your scholarship/grant payment 1 to 2 weeks before the start of your activity abroad and only if you are still permitted to travel to your destination according to Leiden University’s travel policy.  

For who

You must be registered on a Bachelor's or Master's programme at Leiden University.

Eligibility requirements

  • Your  study, internship or research must be a recognised part of your study programme at Leiden University, for which you will receive a minimum of 10 study credits.
  • You must be selected for an exchange spot or your activity abroad must be approved by your programme's Board of Examiners.
  • The study, research or internship must be a minimum of 7 weeks and a maximum of 12 months in duration.
  • The study, research or internship must start between 1 June 2023 and 1 June 2024.
  • You are a talented student which for example can be proven by your academic records, extra-curricular activities and/or previous experiences that have contributed to your studies.

Obligations

  • During your stay abroad you must continue to pay the statutory tuition fee to Leiden University.
  • Within two months of completing your period abroad, you must email your Study Abroad report to: outbound@sea.leidenuniv.nl.
  • You must submit the required Holland Scholarship documents on time, both before and after your stay period. Failure to do so will result in you being obliged to repay your Holland Scholarship.

Exclusions

You cannot be awarded a Holland Scholarship if:

  • You are eligible for funding from the Sustainable Humanities Scholarship (Stagefonds Duurzame Geesteswetenschappen) for your period abroad. Check this with your International Exchange Coordinator.
  • You have been awarded an Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility grant for your period abroad.
  • You are enrolled on an LLM Advanced Studies programme or the Master International Relations and Diplomacy.

Scholarship amount

  • One-off payment of € 1,250 

Application requirements 

Please submit the following documents: 

  • Letter of motivation in which you describe what your academic and personal aims are for your study activities abroad and how this will contribute to your studies at Leiden University.  Please include in this document a Short budget proposal including an indication on how the Scholarship will be spent. Please include other financial resources as well (e.g., Lustra Scholarship, government stipend, etc.).  
  • Official copy of your transcript of grades as issued by your Faculty’s Education Administration Office.
  • If applicable: Approval of your plan by your programme’s Board of Examiners. 

Application process

  1. Gather the above-mentioned required documents.
  2. Complete and submit the Holland Scholarship online application form. Make sure to include all required documents, otherwise you application will not be considered. 

Selection criteria 

Selection committees of the Faculty of your degree programme will look for talented students who have an excellent academic track record, have been involved in extra-curricular activities and other experiences that have (had) a positive effect on their studies at Leiden University. Equally important is that students can explain how their study activities abroad will contribute to their studies at Leiden University. Committees will assess the applications holistically, giving no particular weight to one single aspect of the application of the students.  

Selection process

  • Application files will be sent to the Faculty of your degree programme who will nominate their students for the Holland Scholarships.  
  • Nominated students will be confirmed by the SEA Scholarships Team. 
  • All applicants will be informed of the outcome of the selection procedure by the SEA Scholarships Team at the end of May.

Background

This scholarship is financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science as well as several Dutch research universities and universities of applied sciences.
