Psychologist for PhD students

The Expertise Centre for Student and Educational Affairs (SEA), Department of Student Support Services (SSS) is looking for a:

Psychologist for PhD students (0,4-0,6 fte)

Tasks and responsibilities

  • You will offer short-term psychological guidance for both personal and work-related issues to PhD candidates at Leiden University, in both Dutch and English. Sessions will take place both online and in-person at the university’s locations in Leiden and The Hague;
  • You will speak with PhD candidates in initial consultation sessions during which you will determine the type of help or guidance that should be offered. If more long-term or urgent help is required, you will refer the PhD candidate to external professionals;
  • You will develop and conduct group training sessions and workshops, in both Dutch and English, in the area of personal and work-related issues (for example, fear of failure, motivational problems, time and performance pressure and working relationships with PhD supervisors);
  • You will maintain close contact with your colleagues within the Student Support Services department (student psychologists, study choice and career advisers, student well-being officer, project managers), and will contribute to the exchange of knowledge and advancement of expertise amongst your colleagues;
  • You will maintain close contact with faculties, research schools and PhD networks, as well as other colleagues such as company doctors, confidential counsellors and HR departments;
  • You will attend regular (interdisciplinary) meetings with the student psychologists team and the Student Support Services Department.
  • You will initiate activities that are focused on innovation, professionalization and the advancement of expertise in the area of PhD well-being within the university.
      • The position of Psychologist for PhD candidates is new at Leiden University. It has been created as a 12-month pilot within the Student Support Services Department in 2022. At the end of this 12-month period, it will be decided if, and in which form, the position will be maintained.

Your profile

  • You have obtained a Master’s degree in Psychology. Preferably  followed by further training in cognitive behavioural therapy;
  • You have extensive experience and affinity with the short-term counseling or treatment of (young) adults, in both an individual and group setting;
  • You are internationally orientated and have experience in working with highly-educated staff from different cultures and background.
  • You have excellent speaking and writing skills, in both Dutch and English;
  • You enjoy working in an academic environment, and are a dedicated and innovative colleague who enjoys working in a team and contributing to the development of services for PhD candidates;
  • You have didactic qualities and a flexible attitude.

De organisation

The Expertise Centre for Student and Educational Affairs (SEA) offers services and products relating to admission, registration and guidance for all Dutch and international students. In addition, SEA operates a wide range of facilities relating to students and education. 

The Department of Student Support Services (SSS) aims to support students throughout their student journey. The Department offers information and advice, individual counseling and group training and workshops for students. In addition the Department provides advice and support to teachers and student counselors.

The Department of Student Support Services includes professionals such as student psychologists, student counsellors, study-choice advisors, career advisors and other support staff. The department is also active in matters of diversity and inclusivity.  

Terms and conditions

The appointments will be under the terms of the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) of Dutch Universities. You will be offered an appointment for 1 year, with a possible extension to a permanent position, based on performance. The salary range is €3.807-€5.211 gross per month (fulltime, pay scale 11, depending on experiencein accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
