Student and Educational Affairs (SEA), department Centre for Innovation, is looking for a:

Technical Teamlead

At the Centre for Innovation (CFI) we work together as a multidisciplinary team to create innovative solutions to enhance education, research, and society in general. As the team lead of the data intelligence team, you will manage a small team with various technical backgrounds (data analysts, UX/backend/frontend, XR developers), play a role in strategy development within the Centre for Innovation, structure the software development process and support the team members in reaching their professional goals. Next to your role as team lead, you will be involved in projects and play a major role in developing, deploying, and supporting CFIs capabilities in the area of data driven applications. You will be tasked with solving varied problems over time.

Key responsibilities

The successful applicant will be expected to:

  • Lead a team of self-managing professionals with different technical backgrounds and support them in their professional development;
  • Coach, mentor, and develop your team, including overseeing new employee onboarding and providing career development planning and opportunities;
  • Empower employees to take responsibility for their jobs and goals. Delegate responsibility and provide regular feedback;
  • Improve and manage the software development workflow;
  • Develop strategy around data and AI within the Centre for Innovation together with the team;
  • Represent the Centre for Innovation in technical working groups within Leiden University;
  • Build a network of data and AI related partners within and outside of Leiden University;
  • Work on existing products and propose new projects in the broad theme of Data and AI for stakeholders in Leiden University and potential external partners in domains including but not limited to education;
  • Work in an interdisciplinary team with technical, didactical, media and project management experts on projects that enhances the learning experience for students, supports teachers and have a social impact;
  • Carrying out and attaining the mission of the Centre for Innovation and Leiden University;
  • Contribute to the open-source community, with considerable freedom to choose programming languages and tools of your liking;
  • Support existing Centre technologies/libraries.

Selection criteria

You have working experience in software development or data science which makes you understand the opportunities and challenges that come with working in these fields and deliver successful projects. You have developed and maintained relationships with third parties and was involved in project acquisitions. The past years, you moved to a supervision or management type of role, but you still enjoy getting your hands dirty from time to time and staying up to date with the latest technologies.

You will report to the Director of the Centre for Innovation and have regular meetings with the managers of the other teams within the Centre for Innovation (Operations, Learning, Media, and Project Management teams).

  • BSc/MSc in AI or Data Science, Computer Science, or related discipline/equivalent experience;
  • 7+ years of working experience of which at least 3+ years of management or supervision of a technical team;
  • Excellent team player, and likes to work in a flexible and multidisciplinary team;
  • Outstanding interpersonal relationship building and employee coaching and development skills;
  • Excellent communication skills and coaching and/or supervision experience;
  • Experience with multiple languages, for example JavaScript, Python, R, Java, and C#;
  • Ability to translate needs of partners to concrete solutions;
  • Good command of English in both writing and speaking. Good command of Dutch in both writing and speaking is a plus;
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Curiosity, creativity, enthusiasm to improve your own skills and bring new ideas to the team;
  • Experience with Learning Analytics, with the open source community and with setting up architectural solutions for projects are a plus.

Terms and conditions

We offer this position initially for a period of one year. Salary range from € 4.629, - to €5.943, - gross per month (pay scale 12) based on full-time employment, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.

Leiden University offers an attractive benefits package with additional holiday (8%) and end-of-year bonuses (8.3%), training and career development and sabbatical leave. Our individual choices model gives you some freedom to assemble your own set of terms and conditions. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break.
