The Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Humanities are looking for a
Labmanager Social Sciences & Humanities (0.8 - 1.0 fte)
Description of the position
Research in the Social Sciences and Humanities has many similarities. Researchers and support services in both faculties have grown closer in recent years. These cross-links have now been formalized in the Social Sciences & Humanities (SSH) cluster. In addition to the existing lab spaces for human research, 25 new state-of-the-art lab spaces will be commissioned in the Sylvius building by September 2023 that will provide a new impetus to SSH research. Several working groups are now looking into filling in the logistical, organizational and technical preconditions for this new, extensive lab cluster and interfaculty cooperation. To operationalize and keep the lab cluster running, a Lab Manager is now being sought who will function as the proverbial spider in the web!
In this challenging position, you will participate in the start-up phase to help implement the preconditions under which these lab spaces must operate. When the new lab spaces open, some things will certainly already be in place, but many other procedures, agreements, working methods, etc. will still need to be arranged. Together with enthusiastic experts, who are highly motivated to jointly create a beautiful, new facility, you will further shape and optimize the research facilities for the participating faculties. Once the implementation phase is complete, you will coordinate the day-to-day operations of the lab cluster. You will be facilitating the research and think in collaboration with the researchers on a daily basis. To carry out this task, you frequently interact with a large team of various professionals within the SSH cluster, including the information managers, ICT & Research coordinators, lab technicians, research technicians, lab coordinators and data managers/stewards. Together with this team, you are responsible for keeping the environment running in which research can take place without all stakeholders having to worry about basic facilities. In addition to quality and expertise, mutual commitment and collegiality are central to this team. Furthermore, you will become part of the communities and networks that have emerged within the university research (support) organization.
Key responsibilities
The main duties are:
- Coordinating the process from intake to execution of lab research;
- Scheduling research in the lab spaces and overseeing staffing;
- Organizing structural meetings with involved researchers and support staff;
- Communicating with researchers and other (internal and external) stakeholders about facilities (lab spaces, equipment) and protocols;
- Organizing training/workshops for research methods (handling equipment, etc.);
- Contributing to community building activities;
- Gathering overview (knowledge) of equipment and research protocols and keeping them up-to-date (in collaboration with lab technicians).
Your profile
You feel comfortable in an initiating and service-oriented role. You easily keep an overview of the playing field of lab research and the preconditions therein, so that you can advise stakeholders and colleagues on the direction in which SSH lab research should develop. You value customer friendliness and communicate in a convincing manner. You are solution-oriented and pragmatic. You switch smoothly and quickly between tasks, keep an overview and remain accurate. You are team-oriented and tackle tasks independently and proactively.
Qualifications
- Academic level of work and thinking;
- Affinity for research methods and software used in the social sciences, humanities or cognitive neuroscience;
- Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with lab management is recommended;
- Affinity for process management and/or excellent skills in planning, organization, coordination;
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills;
- Ability to function well in a dynamic environment;
- A good command of spoken and written Dutch and English, or willingness to learn.
