Digital assessment

Digital examinations can take many different forms. Have students write essays, record a podcast or knowledge clip, have them take an exam together in groups or have them take an exam with different types of questions.

Digital examination does not only make different types of examination possible, but can also decrease work pressure. Some advantages of digital testing are:

  1. Deciphering handwriting is no longer necessary.
  2. If you create a question database you can easily reuse questions in upcoming years.
  3. Split up grading and easily collaborate online with co-workers on correcting student results.
  4. Closed questions are checked automatically.
  5. After the exam, you receive an analysis of the quality of your exam.

Overview types of examination

Information and manuals about the mentioned tools can be found under digital examination tools. On the university webpage about remote testing you can take a look at the Manual for Digital Assessment for tips and tools for digital examination.

Tool: Remindo, Brightspace Quizzes

If you want to encourage students to engage with course materials, use formative exams they can take at home before or after class. By using Remindo you can create a question database for future use. Have a look at the webinar on formative assessment through Remindo and request an account at ECOLe to get to work. If you are not interested in creating a question database over a longer period then Brightspace Quizzes may be the better fit.

Tool: TurnitIn, Peermark

Students hand in writing assignments through Brightspace Turnitin or Pitch2Peer. Turnitin is an external tool that is integrated in Brightspace to, for example, grade assignments and papers. It also checks for plagiarism.

Tool: Kaltura Capture, Audacity, Sonobus, Pitch2Peer

Students can give standard presentations on campus, or online through one of the video conferencing tools, but it also possible to have them hand in a digital product. Have them make their own podcast or knowledge clip, for example. Doing this teaches them valuable skills for the labour market.

Students can make use of the same video and audio tools available to lecturers. There is a student manual to help them learn how to make video essays.

Pitch2Peer can be used to hand in video and audio products. Download instructions in Dutch or English.

Tool: Brightspace TurnitIn, Remindo

Are the students allowed to consult class materials during the exam? Give the students a Turnitin assignment and give them a time frame to hand in their answers. You can use Turnitin to check for plagiarism if necessary.

Note: Turnitin does not allow for the option to have multiple teachers grade an exam at the same time. If this is something you want, use Remindo.

Tools: Remindo, Brightspace Quizzes

Both Remindo and Brightspace Quizzes can be used to have students take multiple choice exams, possibly in combination with open questions. Both programmes offer several different types of questions. Remindo exams can be taken on campus as well.

Take a look at the information under digital assessment tools to pick one of the two. ECOLe can also help you with your choice.

Tools: Kaltura Live Room, MS Teams

Oral examinations can once again be taken on campus. Is this, for whatever reason, not possible? Use Kaltura Live Room or MS Teams.

Kaltura Live Room

When you need to record an oral exam, use Kaltura Live Room. Create a channel and set up a password to share with only the specific student, to prevent uninvited guests from coming in.

MS Teams

Is a recording not needed? Oral exams can also take place through the MS Teams chat function. You can find students by searching their s-number and (video)calling them.

Listening tests can be carried out with the help of Remindo. With Remindo you can limit the amount of times a student can listen to an audio fragment. Keep in mind that students are able to pause the fragments. Online proctoring can be applied to decrease cases of fraud or abuse.

Facilities for students with disabilities

Students with disabilities are entitled to extra facilities during examinations, such as extra time or a laptop. The procedure regarding examinations for students with a disability can be found in Procedure regarding examinations for students with a disability 2020-2021.
